Customised Multi Profile Wheelchair Backrest

A custom-moulded backrest in its raw, pre-upholstered form, designed to support spinal asymmetry, pelvic obliquity, and complex postural needs.

WHEELCHAIR MODEL:

This Multi Profile Backrest is shown fitted to a Quickie IRIS tilt-in-space wheelchair.

Although the client uses a different powered chair, the IRIS allowed us to accurately replicate her hip angle, seat depth, seat height, and tilt—without removing her existing backrest.

This setup streamlines the fitting process and avoids unnecessary equipment changes.

CUSTOMISATIONS:

This backrest was custom built at Motion Wheelchairs using a profile captured with our Backrest Profiler—a tool that creates a precise 3D map of the user’s spinal shape to guide personalised support.

The client presented with significant scoliosis and pelvic obliquity, and requested a seating position that would allow her head to appear upright and her shoulders level. 

To meet this goal, we hand-shaped a raw backrest shell and rotated it approximately 15 degrees to the left to achieve her desired alignment in a supported position.

The result is a fully customised, contoured backrest that provides targeted postural support and accommodates significant asymmetry.
