Customised Permobil F5VS Power Wheelchair

Customised Permobil F5VS Power Wheelchair

A customised standing power wheelchair setup enabling independent control and improved stability for a young woman with cerebral palsy.

WHEELCHAIR MODEL:

Permobil F5VS Standing Power Wheelchair

This setup was tailored for a young woman with cerebral palsy who experiences significant involuntary movements but maintains strong head and neck control.

The F5VS provides advanced power positioning and a standing function, offering medical and functional benefits. However, this client required further customisation to support her postural needs and enable independent access to her wheelchair functions.

CUSTOMISATIONS:

Switch Control Headrest

A custom-moulded headrest was crafted to include three embedded switches beneath the headrest cover. These allow the client to independently drive her wheelchair. A fourth switch, located on a separate attachment to the left side, is used to toggle between driving and mode settings.

This control system was developed to take advantage of the client’s reliable head movement and to provide safe, consistent access to drive and power positioning functions. Prior to this solution, she was unable to self-propel or independently adjust her position.

Custom Armrests

Ottobock armrest channels were adapted with bespoke additions to keep the client's arms supported and safely contained within the wheelchair frame. These include custom grab handles, arm guards, a padded neoprene strap, and a locking mechanism to prevent the armrests from swinging upward during involuntary movements, without interfering with the chair's standing function.

Footblock & Ankle Huggers

A fixed footblock, used in conjunction with Pelvi-Loc ankle huggers, was installed to maintain a neutral foot position. This helps reduce lower limb fatigue and assists in overall postural alignment.
